fashionista, briana barone

On Monday, my best friend Bri and I went for a cute little lunch at White Spot in Langley, then stopped on Daly Road for a little photoshoot. For those who know where Daly Road is, it was a little freaky, not to mention cold, but fun nonetheless. Bri already has a little modeling experience, so she was perfect to photograph, and so much fun! She’s a goofball, and I tried to capture her unique personality as best as I could. Afterwards, we went back to my house and sat on my bed for the interview. I had lost my notes, so I pretty much asked any question I thought of, which made us laugh - which is what we do a lot of. Bri is currently dating a great guy Adam, she has an older brother, and she looks identical to her mama. She works two jobs at the moment; one at Starbucks, and the other at Aritzia. Oh, and she’s currently saving up for our February trip to MEXICO! Can’t freaking wait, I’ll definitely be doing a Cabo San Lucas Style post – but for now, it’s all about Bri.

So Bri, tell ‘Discovering Elegance’ what you’re wearing.

A sexy outfit.

(Laughs) Of course.

Well, I’d describe it as chic and casual. I’ve got on my black tights from Aritzia, a beige sweater from Lululemon, and my white tank top is from Off The Wall. I like the tank ‘cause it’s long.

What about accessories?

My ring is from Forever 21, my earrings are from Spring, my flower brooch is also from Forever 21, and my sexy black thigh-high boots are from Aldo. They’re called ‘Cassidy,’ and I love them – they have a sort of biker-chick feel to them.

Awesome, those boots really are cute. So, talk to me about your style – you’re pretty d
istinguished on how you dress.

My style is just… me! See, I don’t dress up everyday, but I don’t just dress casual everyday either – it depends on my mood. There’s days when I feel cozy and I put together a cute outfit that’s comfortable to wear, but then there’s days where I want to dress up and be trendy. It totally depends! I don’t even know. Do you know what my style is?

I’d say you’re Wilfrid, all over; neutral colours with comfy fabrics, but always cute. You stay true to your style, too.

But I always dress up comfy outfits with jewelry.

Right, you are a huge lover of accessories!

Big jewelry and purse fan, oh my goodness. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, headbands, big purses, small purses, clutch purses – I love it all.

Where would you say the best place to shop for accessories is?

Blue Ruby or Forever 21. Actually, Aldo Accessories has great things as well! I just love jewelry. I actually have a huge jewelry box in my room, and once a month I completely reorganize it with new accessories that I’ve bought, and put the others that I’m bored of away in other little compartments – it’s a bit of an obsession.

But a good obsession! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear the same piece of jewelry twice. But say you had wear one accessory every single day, what would it be?

That’s so hard! I’d definitely say my silver necklace that Adam gave me, since it’s simple and goes with everything. But, I’ll have to cheat and say two things because a lot of my outfits look good with gold – and I love my gold bangles. They technically all cam
e together, so they count as one!

Good enough for me! All right, let’s move on to clothes. You currently are working at Aritzia – and I know you love Wilfrid.

Love Wilfrid! But, I have to say, my style doesn’t fully revolve around just Aritzia – more like, pieces from Aritzia. I’m usually always wearing something from there, but never a full outfit.

That makes sense. What would be your favourite Wilfrid piece?

Probably my long flowy sweaters that just drape over, they don’t have buttons or anything. They’re comfortable but I can dress them up with tights, boots, accessories… Anything, really.

Do you enjoy working at Artizia?

I do, and I don’t. Sometimes it gets a little competitive, but I love the clothes and most of the girls are really cute and nice to talk to. It’s hard though, my personality gets in the way – I’m too nice!

How would you describe your personality?

I don’t know… Awesome? (Laughs) No, but I think I’m a pretty cool person! I think I’m unique and different in my own way, just like you are – you have certain things that you’re different about, and it’s the same way with me. Although, I do believe that I have good taste – I know how to colour coordinate…

So what’s that then – tasteful-colour-coordinated-uniquely-awesome?

(Laughs) Sure.

Do you get your sense of style from magazines, celebrities, people on the street…?

Magazines, yes. What I really like is if I see something on one of my friends, I won’t necessarily run out and buy it, but I’ll take the trend and make it into something that is ‘me’ and something that I would wear.

Any celebrities?

I really like how Hilary Duff dresses and puts herself together – she’s cute and flirty, but with an edge, kind of like Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens. Also, I love the way Kim Kardashian dresses. Her style is very sexy, but sophisticated.

Alright, so always the big question – what is going to be in the future for Briana Barone?

Right now, I’m just living life one day at a time. Nothing is really set in stone, but I’m planning on just working until September when I’ll go to school.

For teaching?

That’s the most realistic choice, but I’m always changing my mind. I just want to do something different. Maybe move to New York and be like Samantha Jones, who knows? I just want to be successful and rich – but most of all, I just want to be liked for who I am.

personal style, weekly outfit

This is a little new for me, talking about myself and my own style, but I thought I'd do a little thing called 'weekly outfit' so I can put my own closet creations out there. Although I do look up to the likes of Blair Waldorf fashion and a little bit of Jenny, I wore what I thought was an outfit that really represented me and who I'm going to become in the future. Since Meagan was looking all cute, I couldn't let her down by looking scrub so I dressed up as well. And here's the result!

My jacket is ridiculous - it was a gift for my eighteenth, and I wear it twenty four seven with every outfit imaginable. If you don't have a leather jacket already, invest in one! They can be worn over top of hoodies for a laid back look, or paired with girly dresses to get the balance of hard and soft. I got mine from Danier Leather ($169), but GUESS, Le Chateau, Forever 21, and many other local stores sell faux-leather (for the Andrea's) and real leather for semi-reasonable prices!

My pants are even more ridiculous, and they were also a birthday gift from my mom. They're BCBG Maxazria, and I call them cigarette pants with large pockets. They're beautiful... there's not much more I can say. When I wear them I feel like a million bucks, and I think everyone should have that one item in their closet that cost a little too much, but makes them feel fabulous no matter what.

My deep blue silk shirt is from H&M ($50), and I also have a beige coloured one in a similar style. I like the fact that it's not low and revealing because I don't believe that's necessary anymore. Leave a little mystery!!

My boots are from Aldo ($49) and the perfect thing about them is that they have a heel, but are really comfortable to walk in! It's definitely a must have when there's a fifteen-minute walk every day to and from school.

This outfit is girly, chic, and edgy all wrapped into one, which is how I would classify my style in a simplified way. I like to stay true to myself, but also try new things and new styles - fashion wouldn't be fun without a little spontaneity! I'll be catching Andrea Cain soon for a little interview and photo session, and she'll definitely be wearing her polar bear faux fur vest - oh yes, she is a daring one.

fashionista, meagan hall

This afternoon I met up with one of my good friends Meagan, who graciously agreed to be interviewed and was also a gorgeous model! We had a nice little Starbucks date and caught up on everything we don't already know about eachother. We then ventured into the cold and had a little photoshoot in JR park. Meagan and I both attend SFU and are aiming for our Bachelor of Arts in Communications; she's dating a wonderful guy Justin, has an older sister and a cute little brother, and is a definite fashionista at heart.

What are you wearing at this very moment?

Well, I have on my new red military-style coat that is BB Dakota, my new favourite brand, which, to my knowledge, is only sold at Off The Wall. My purple dress is from Urban Outfitters, white tights from Aldo Accessories, and black heeled boots from Zara.

What about your accessories?

Oh, well my ring is from Off The Wall as well, my headband is from Claire’s, and my purse is Juicy Couture!

That purse is gorgeous. Good pick Justin! All right, so, how would you describe your style?

My style is definitely comfy, but with a girly twist. I always tend to look like a doll - bows, little dresses, little girl tights, but comfortable. I don’t like uncomfortable fabrics, so most of my clothes are cotton, which I love.

So, comfy-cute! I’d describe you the same way. Okay, what are some of your favourite stores to shop in?

Well, I love Urban Outfitters, but I definitely have to pick over what they have. Some of their clothes are too urban, and a little out there for me – I would never wear a whole outfit from UO, but I’d pair one of their pieces with something else to make it more ‘Meagan.’ I love this new brand, BB Dakota – it’s only a label so far, but every time I go into Off The Wall I find something; it’s like this brand went into my head and made everythi
ng for me personally!

Ha, I love that. Anywhere else?

Le Chateau, for something a little more fancy, and Zara downtown always has cute things for great prices.

Good stuff! Okay, so tell me who you look to when discovering new styles – your ‘style icon.’

(After a lot of thought) You know what, I think I follow fashion blogs more than I follow a certain one person. I love the street blogs, such as the Satorialist and Style Quotient, because it’s real people. I like to look at how different people use layering, and I especially love all the winter styles – that way, I can work with what I already have instead of having to go out and buy something new.

That’s so true. And plus, celebrities are always shown in ridiculously overpriced clothing – how is that even possible to mimic in regular life?

Exactly. The blogs in Vancouver always post what the person is wearing, where it’s from, and how much it costs – usually very affordable, which is what ‘Discovering Elegance’ is all about!

Yes! I love that. Okay, so on to magazines – which one is your favourite read?

Definitely Cosmo, it is by far my favourite. I know there aren’t too many style sections, but I still love it. I also enjoy a good trashy read like Us Weekly; I don’t really look to magazines for fashion advice, like I said blogs are more my thing – I like magazines more for the gossip than anything.

Cool, very unique. So, if you had to work with any one designer, who would it be?

Oh, wow, now I just thought of a style icon. I am in love with Whitney Port, she is so cute! Her fashion line, Whitney Eve, is perfect because she’s just starting out and doing her own thing – her designs reflect how she would dress herself, which makes them so much more appealing. They’re cute and girly, but comfy at the same time, which is one hundred percent my style.

I knew you’d think of someone! Whitney is perfect, I love her as well. Okay, so I know as well as anyone that you’re in love with Hunter boots…

Oh my goodness yes. Love of my life!! Well, my hunt for rain boots has led to Hunter. I think rain boots are the tackiest thing ever, but Hunter’s are so chic – they’re tall so they don’t cut off your leg, and they don’t have a big chunky heel at the bottom. They look just like fancy boots, but they’re rubber!

Other than Hunter boots, are you a fan of any other trends that are out right now?

Well, I’m a big fan of the oversized scarf. But, you do have to wear it with certain things! It’s always in magazines, showing celebrities wearing big scarves when they’re shopping, with baggy jeans and a cute casual outfit. I have yet to pull it off…

That’s not true! When you wore it that one time it looked really cute.

Well, thanks! I’m also really into the boyfriend blazer; I just bought a cute one, BB Dakota, with scrunched sleeves and it’s a longer fit. I really like the menswear style over fancy dresses – and of course, I love anything with bows.

Of course, bows! Okay, tell me what your signature scent is.

Fancy by Jessica Simpson! No one has really heard of it, but it’s really sweet and smells delicious.

Well, final question! What are your future aspirations in life? I know you want to do something in the line of fashion?

Ah, the big question. Yes, I’m hoping to do something within the fashion PR world. After I’m done school, I’ve decided to go to Blanche Macdonald and take their Fashion Merchandising program there, then work my way up in public relations! I used to want to write for a magazine, but I think I’ll be better representing a fashion company and just be fabulous – that’s my goal!

23 December 2009

embellish me, please!

LUSTWORTHY TREND: Embellishment

From headbands to sweaters, my absolute favourite trend right now is the use of embellishment. Whether it’s sequins, studs, lace, or jewels, an embellished garment can never go wrong – well, maybe it can if you are fashion illiterate, but other than that you're golden. Check out my pricey purchase at Urban Outfitters, and also Elizabeth Sorrey’s amazing peacock feathered headbands that are for purchase on Etsy. Plus some other little tidbits of embellished glory that I have thrown in the mix. Enjoy!

Spring & Clifton ‘Mixed Media’ Cardigan
$88 from Urban Outfitters

Amazing embellishment that runs along the front; lace, gold studs, and silk. The fit is long and baggy in the arms, but flattering on any figure. The colour may seem to wash out lighter skin at first, but it actually compliments more than anything. Can be worn buttoned up with tights or jeans (would not recommend bare legs, oh dear), unbuttoned over neutral shirts with no added frill, and it looks exceptional with a leather jacket layered over top. I rocked this today at the photoshoot for Youth Church, and found out that it is also easy to dance in...

Aldo ‘Urbanaik’ Headband in Midnight Black
$12 Aldo & Aldo Accessories

Comfy thick-elastic headband with cream embellishment, complete with crystals, beads, and sequins. Great for adding a little something to black dresses, and trust me; it works wonders when your bangs are a little greasy from the day before, as it is worn close to your hairline!

BCBG Maxazria “Stud-Embellished’ Gloves
On Sale $78 BCBG Maxazria

I’ve seen these beautiful gloves in store, but I still can’t justify buying them even with the sale price. Leather gloves are a definite must-have, especially driving to school or work in the morning – my hands would freeze on the steering wheel! They are even sexier with a little detail, so I recommend splurging on a gorgeous pair.

Elizabeth Sorrey 'Mixed Pheasant Feather' Hairband
$12 Etsy.com

Liz is a good friend of mine, practically family actually - my boyfriend's older brother's new fiance! They are a fantastic couple, and her accessories are just as gorgeous as she is. She sells her pieces on Etsy, and has been very successful with it - you can also find some of her creations in Bio Salon and Seventh Heaven Hair Gallery, cute shops close to Crescent Beach. Liz is obviously extremely talented, and her pieces showcase her unique flare. Her accessories feature feathers for the most part, and beautiful ones at that - a perfect embellishment! I will be interviewing Liz in the new year to get a feel for where she gets her creativity from as an artist, and any upcoming pieces that she may be working on. Be sure to keep updated!

embracing the new year

For as long as I can remember, I have been an adorer of all things related to fashion. My mom started it all when she put me in frilly dresses and curled my hair each day when I was young - she wanted her little girl to grow up in style, and her wish was granted. I've always relished in reading the glossy fashion magazines and shopping according to the trends, but I've never had an outlet to publish my own thoughts and true love of style. That is what I want this blog to be about - not ridiculously overpriced designer clothes or celebrities that have it all, because that isn't what style means to me. Style is being individual and embracing what makes you feel good. Clothes are meant to transform the body, whether it's according to your mood or just whatever is on your floor, clothes should reflect who you are as a person; Discovering Elegance will be a journey of my experience through fashion, and others experiences as well - upcoming trends, designers, and local talent will be showcased as much as possible. I plan to have a career in fashion one day, and all I can hope is that people like what I have to say, or as least respect it. If you don't have something nice to say, say it anyways - I'm not a lover of criticism, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. It's important to enjoy the process of life, which is why I can't wait to get started and begin discovering elegance in the everyday life of fashion!

Fashions may fade, but style is eternal. Yves Saint Laurent

TALKSHOW TUESDAY:

One of my icons in more ways than one is Alexa Chung, star of her own talk show 'Its On With Alexa Chung,' which just finished its airing on MTV. A former model, Alexa has a style that is a mixture of grunge and girly accents, which I think make a perfect combination of hard and soft. Originally from London, she admits in an interview that coming to America was a difficult transition, but she definitely handled it in style. On her successful talk show, she has a strong opinion and never forgets to have fun; its rare to see a model who is so down to earth, and that's what makes her so beautiful inside and out!
